The Finger of God
And
the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they
could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast. Then the magicians said
unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was
hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said. – Exodus
8:18-19
There
are two conversations in exodus worth mentioning. The first is in chapter six
between God and Moses. The entire chapter of burning bush event shows God’s
compassion and His love for his chosen people. The love of God is shown in
Glory in this chapter as a father who will stretch out his arm and save his
people. When I first stretched out my arm to carry Joshua, my first born, it
was a physical process of using the whole body to reach out carry, embrace and
secure him with my whole complete presence. There were no parts but the whole
of me stretched out for Joshua. Similarly we observe God in the chapter saying,
I am, the almighty Jehovah, I will bring you out, I will rid you out, I will
redeem you, I will take you out, I will be your god and you shall know it. YOU SHALL
KNOW IT!
In the
presence of our true and living God that is how we are to feel. The chief end
of man is worship God and be fully satisfied with God. (Westminster Shorter
Catechism, Q1) Being satisfied with God and glorifying him daily in all our
shortcomings and waiting on his stretched-out arm for his blessings is our
worship.
Compare
this conversation to the Egyptian magicians had with the Pharaoh. The magicians
could not counter produce the plague and told the Pharaoh it is the finger of
God. “This is the finger of God”. God showered upon Egypt ten plagues and brought
the whole nation and its rule to their knees in submission with his finger. Here
we have God’s wrath described by a non-Hebrew as the finger of Goad and we have
God’s words spoken to Moses that his stretched-out arm will deliver his people.
When we are faced with uncertainties lets us take comfort that God provides a stretched-out
arm for us. Let it be our pray. Dear Lord, draw ever close to me and let me
find comfort and peace in your arms always. In Jesus name, Amen.
Wherefore
say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from
under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage,
and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great
judgments: - Exodus 6:6
